Sema Tanguiane

It was with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Sema Tanguiane.

In the 13 years he served as ADG/Education, he made an enormous contribution to the development of education in our Member States and of our education programme worldwide.

Tanguinane embodied the principles set out in UNESCO's constitution, a driving force in our mission to promote education as a basic human right, literacy and in the importance we must give to education for peace and international understanding. A man of wisdom and depth, he was always there to support the Education Sector, the new ADG and the DG. As ADG/ED I was indeed fortunate to be able to continue to build on the strong foundation he laid. My deepest condolences to his family and assurance of the esteem in which he is held by all of us in UNESCO who have benefitted from his dedication.
